Food and garden organics waste management- Moorabool rural waste zone

Project Overview

Moorabool Shire Council is seeking feedback from residents in the rural waste zone regarding the management of food and garden organics (FOGO) waste.

As part of State Government waste reforms and Kerbside Service Standard requirement, Council’s must introduce a four-stream waste system. Council is currently exploring the most suitable approach for rural areas for Food Organic and Garden Organic Disposal. Your input will assist in determining whether a kerbside FOGO collection service, transfer station drop-off, or home composting and on-property reuse is most appropriate for your community.

  • FOGO- Moorabool Rural Waste Zone

As part of State Government waste reforms and Kerbside Service Standard requirement, Council’s must introduce a four-stream waste system. Council is currently exploring the most suitable approach for rural areas for Food Organic and Garden Organic Disposal. Your input will assist in determining whether a kerbside FOGO collection service, transfer station drop-off, or home composting and on-property reuse is most appropriate for your community.

As part of the State Government waste service model Food Organics will no longer be able to be placed into the red bin from July 2027.  Any area that doesn’t have a FOGO kerbside service will need to dispose of their Food Organics by either onsite compositing or to a drop off facility such as transfer stations.

To help inform a Council decision on implementation of a FOGO (green) bin in townships across the Shire, please share your views by completing the feedback form attached or scan the QR code to respond online by 12 December 2025. The outcome of the survey will inform a decision on how Council implements the new service standards.

To help make an informed decision on the matter, it is anticipated that the cost of a kerbside FOGO service collected fortnightly would be approximately $100/annum added to the waste service charge. Drop off at transfer stations would incur the associated gate fee.
