Place Naming Policy

Project Overview

Council invites members of the community to review and provide comment on the proposed Place Naming Policy which has been updated in accordance with Victoria’s Place Naming Rules 2022.

Feedback will be open from 9 October to 6 November 2023.

The Place Naming Policy incorporates statutory requirements for geographical place naming in accordance with Victoria’s Place Naming Rules 2022. A number of changes to the rules include:

  • Notification requirements
  • Changing a road type or numbers
  • Consent
  • Traditional Owner Language
  • Petitions
  • Objections
  • Community support
  • New process to empower Traditional Owners
  • Principle C - Linking the name to the place
  • Principle F - Names must not discriminate or be offensive
  • Principle G - Gender equality
  • Principle H - Dual naming
  • Principle I  - Using commemorative names
  • Section 4.10 - Naming features in residential or commercial subdivisions

How to get involved

Community members who wish to make a submission about the Place Naming Policy are encouraged to make submissions either:

  • Online via this website
  • By email to info@moorabool.vic.gov.au
  • In writing to the Chief Executive Officer – PO Box 18, Ballan, Vic 3342

Community members can also request to be heard at a public hearing in person or register to speak to the item at the Ordinary Meeting of Council on 14 February 2024
