Councils must adhere to the requirements of the Privacy and Data Protection Act 2014, which stipulates how we must handle the personal information of people, including community members, as it relates to collection, use and storage of the information. A number of pieces of legislation were referenced during the creation of the draft policy as well as how other Councils were managing CCTV systems within their municipalities.
This draft policy provides direction on how Council will implement, manage and cease CCTV systems in public spaces, such as roads or footpaths, as well as Council owned, managed or controlled areas such as recreation reserves and Council buildings. This policy does not allow for Council to implement CCTV systems in the following areas:
We would love to hear your thoughts on the aspects of the policy that relate to CCTV systems in spaces that you might enter, such as public spaces and on Council buildings that you may attend. Elements of the draft policy that cannot be influenced by the community include our requirements to adhere to legislation, as well as Council buildings that are not public-facing.
